
SOUTHWEST RACING ASSOCIATION
PRO STOCK RULES & REGULATIONS (2006-2008)
These rules and/or regulations set forth herein are designed to provide for the orderly conduct of racing events and to establish minimum acceptable requirements for such events. These rules shall govern the condition of all Southwest Racing Association events and, by participating in these events, all participants are deemed to have complied with these rules. No express or implied warranty of safety shall result from publications of or compliance with these rules and/or regulations. They are intended as a guide for the conduct of the sport and are in no way a guarantee against injury or death to participants, spectators, or others.
WE INTEND FOR ALL CARS TO BE COMPETING WITH EACH OTHER. IF YOU DO SOMETHING TO YOUR CAR THAT THESE RULES HAVE OVERLOOKED THAT WE FEEL GIVES YOU AN EDGE OVER THE OTHER COMPETITORS, YOU WILL BE REQUIRED TO CHANGE YOUR CAR.
1. CHASSIS/BODY/ROLL BARS
A. All cars must be 1955 or newer, originally produced American made passenger cars with a minimum wheelbase of 101”.
B. Bodies and chassis must be stock appearing. Aftermarket Fiberglass or aluminum bodies will be allowed.
C. Tubular bumpers will be allowed, front and rear, provided they are covered by the nose piece, OEM bumper covers, or must be covered from top deck to top of bumper. Maximum tube size allowed is 1 ¾” x 0.095” round tubing or 2” square x 1/8” thick.
D. Tubular rear bumpers must be flat across the back of the car and be tapered or rounded toward the wheel well and strapped to the quarter panel or frame. NO SHARP EDGES ALLOWED.
E. If a nosepiece is used, it must be OEM or OEM replica. NO OUTLAW STYLES ALLOWED.
F. Interior decking is allowed. Any areas that are covered must be constructed so that access is available for inspection. Must be flat, no rake to increase down force.
G. All cars must have closed in rear panel. Sheet metal or screen mesh is acceptable. A 6” spoiler from brake with a maximum height of 44” from the ground is acceptable. Maximum of 12” gusset allowed.
H. A complete roof is required, as are windshield posts. Window openings must be minimum twelve (12) inch, measured from top door bar or interior panel (which ever is higher) to roll cage top hallo or roof panel (which ever is lower).
I. Rub rails (optional) must be mounted flush against the body. Maximum material size is 1 ½” square tubing.
J. All chrome, trim, glass, antennas and mirrors must be removed.
K. Cars must be neat and stock appearing. If your car does not look like a car, you will be told about it and given ample time to correct if before you are told, “Don’t bring it back looking like that.”
L. Frames and bodies may be interchanged. OEM front clip required to rear of bellhousing.
M. All cars must have a six-point roll cage with a minimum of four (4) door bars on the left side and three on the right side. Cage must be a minimum of 1 ½” tubing (1 ¾” is recommended). Minimum thickness is .095”. If the roll cage is bolted to the floor pan, a 6” x 6” x ¼” steel plate must be bolted to the top and bottom of the floor pan to weld to.
N. Front and rear loops are allowed, but must remain inside the body structure.
O. Steel Door plate 10 gauge or 1/8 minimum thickness, must be securely welded to outside of driver side door bars and cover area from top door bar to bottom door bar and from rear hoop down-post to five (5) inches in front of seat.
P. NO convertibles, pickups, jeeps, imports or commercial vehicles.
Q. Minimum weight at any time is 3000 pounds with driver. NO TOLERANCE!!!!! All ballast weight attached to car must be painted white with the car number marked on it. No ballast weight will be allowed inside cockpit of car. Bolt on weight must be bolted securely, and no lower than bottom of frame member in trunk area, subject to tech approval. All bolted on weights must be painted white and stamped with the car number. Minimum of two (2) ½” bolts per 50 pounds of weight must pass through all weights and attaching structure.
R. A tow hook must be added to the front and rear of car.
S. Six (6) hood pins needed. Four (4) in front and two (2) at rear of hood. Two (2) deck lid pins if deck lid is hinged; four (4) pins if not hinged are mandatory.
2. ENGINE/TRANSMISSION/DRIVE SHAFT
A. Cars must have engines and chassis of the same manufacturer (GM to GM, Ford to Ford, Etc.) Blocks and cylinder heads must be cast iron. Any make cast iron is allowed.
a) NOT ALLOWED: aluminum heads, aluminum blocks, roller or mushroom lifters, roller cams, magnetos, computers, fuel injection, nitrous, or turbochargers.
b) Lifters must be stock diameter.
c) 180 degree headers are allowed.
d) Roller rocker arms are allowed.
e) No Dry Sumps allowed.
B. The centerline of the lead spark plug hole must be even with or in front of the centerline of the upper ball joints.
C. Automatic or manual shift OEM transmissions only. Torque converters are not required on automatic transmissions that have a control valve. No buttons, dog clutches, or quick-change devices. All cars must have forward and reverse gears. Scatter shields are required on all cars equipped with automatic transmissions and steel bell housings are required on all cars equipped with manual transmissions.
D. Drive shaft must be painted white and have a loop of 360 degrees around it approximately 3” behind the front universal joint. Minimum loop material is 2” x 1/8” steel flat stock, no chains.
SECTION C
3. REAR END/SUSPENSION/TIRES/WHEELS
A. Any passenger car or light truck rear ends can be used in any car. No quick changes of any kind allowed. Floater rear ends are allowed and highly recommended. Rear ends must be locked with spool or mini spool.
B. Rear end suspension one of three (1) Leaf, (2) Four bar stock style, or (3) three bar with pan hard bar. NO FIVE (5) BAR ALLOWED.
C. Weight jacks, racing or aftermarket steel springs (min 5 inch), or shocks may be used. Shocks can be relocated. No coil over shocks of any kind allowed. No driver accessible weight jacking devices allowed. No coil over eliminators and mono leaf combinations allowed.
4. COOLING/FUEL/BATTERY
A. Radiator must be in the front of the engine compartment. Transmission coolers must be mounted in a manner that is safe in case of accident or ruptures and does not interfere with vision through car. No coolers inside car.
B. A racing fuel cell is mandatory and must be securely mounted in the trunk area within a safely constructed mount. A fuel cell may not hang below the bottom of the rear end center section. Two steel straps front to rear and two side to side. Minimum strap size is 1” x 1/8” steel flat stock. Fuel tank area must be completely sealed off from the driver’s compartment with sheet metal. Minimum fuel cell height at all times is 6” above the ground.
C. Gasoline only may be used. No alcohol or pressurized fuel systems or electrical fuel pumps.
D. Maximum carburetor is one (1) four barrel.
E. No Predator type carburetors.
F.
A. No grace race on safety related violations.
B. All cars must have a minimum of driver side windscreen in the windshield area and have a minimum of three (3) 1” bars evenly spaced. Center bar will be at least 1 ½” x .095” round tubing mounted in cage.
C. All cars must have aluminum racing type seat. An approved five-point racing-harness with date stamp no more than 4 years old is required. All seat belts must be fastened in an approved manner with 3/8’ grade 8 bolts and have a single point release mechanism. All installations are subject to tech approval. Seat must be bolted to the roll cage.
D. No rear-view mirrors allowed (no mirrors of any kind allowed).
E. All drivers must wear full safety equipment every time they go out on the track. SFI approved fire suit, SFI approved gloves, and Snell approved full-face helmet. Helmets must have full chin protectors and a flip up shield for fire protection. No open face helmets. No goggles allowed. Helmets must meet Snell 95 testing standards for automotive racing. The S.W.R.A. strongly recommends the use of Snell SA2000 helmets. Racing approved fire retardant shoes are required.
F. A fire extinguisher is required in every pit. A 2-pound fire extinguisher or on board fire out is required in every car.
G. Window net is mandatory, no string type allowed.
H. All cars must have a clearly marked “MASTER DISCONNECT SWITCH”, within the driver’s reach and accessible from outside the car.
I. Roll bar must be padded at any location that may come into contact with driver in an accident.
6. MISCELLANEOUS ENFORCEMENT
A. Legible and clean numbers are required on both front doors of the car, and on the roof facing right. These numbers must be a minimum of 18” tall. Numbers at least 6” tall are required on the front and rear of the car. Failure to field a car at least every 60 days could cause you to loose your car number. If this happens, there are no refunds on lost car numbers. Be sure you are going to field a car before you buy a car number. Previous year’s champion exempt.
